Dielectric breakdown is a phenomenon that occurs when voltage exceeding a certain value is applied to the insulation, causing it to break down, and to lose its insulating properties, thereby allowing current to flow.
The voltage level above which this phenomenon occurs is called the breakdown voltage (abbreviated BV or BDV).
Each silicon capacitor product has a specified breakdown voltage, indicated as BV.
